Dominic Thiem to retire by the end of 2024? Here’s what we know
Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Austrian tennis pro Dominic Thiem has reportedly made the decision to retire by the end of 2024. Struggling with form over the past two years, his recent performances in the sport have been disappointing.

Ever since the Austrian won the 2020 US Open, he has been struggling with form. On top of that, he has been troubled by injuries that derailed his situation more. Despite being 30 years old, Thiem was keen on getting back to form and had even set a goal for the year to try to get inside the Top 50

Currently, the Austrian is outside the Top 100 and has a mountainous task to get to his goal of Top 50. Reports signal that Thiem will hang up his racket in Vienna.

According to a recent X post by journalist Jose Morgado, Thiem has already started informing his sponsors about the retirement plans. Though a sad result, it is not a surprising event and Thiem might soon confirm with the public.

If true, Thiem joins Rafael Nadal, Diego Schwartzman, and Andy Murray to play out the 2024 season as their last before retiring. There are more than five months for the Vienna Open, and Thiem would hope to play his heart out before his home tournament.

Dominic Thiem has a few kind words for Diego Schwartzman, who announced his retirement plans

The 2024 season of tennis will see the last of some players. One player who is set to retire by the end of the year is Diego Schwartzman. The former World No.8 has recently announced that he will play his last match at the 2025 Argentina Open.

Many players have wished the Argentine ace luck for his future. Dominic Thiem, who also seems to be on the same track, had two kind words for Schwartzman. “Absolute legend,” wrote Thiem under the Argentine’s Instagram retirement announcement post.

Thiem played Schwartzman nine times in his career with a clear lead in their head-to-head with six wins. Their last match was at the 2020 Roland Garros quarterfinals, which went on for a long time. With three of those five sets going to the tie-break, the match had left the players exhausted. Schwartzman had taken the win then, and the two have not played each other since.
