Lorenzo Musetti reveals Wimbledon 'goal' after first ever win
Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Lorenzo Musetti has spoken about his aims for Wimbledon, after his 'great' first round victory on Monday.

Musetti had never previously won a match at SW19 before, but broke his duck when after beating Juan Pablo Varillas, 6-3 6-1 7-5.

Despite first round losses in his two previous ventures to SW19, Musetti had lost to eventual semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and quarter-finalist Taylor Fritz in 2022.

Musetti had also reached two ATP tour grass court quarter-finals this year in Stuttgart and Queen's, with the 21-year-old continuing these improved results onto the grass major.

The 16th seed was full of joy after his victory, and revealed his ambitions for the remainder of The Championships.

“It was a great day. The goal is to reach the second week at Wimbledon. Rankings do not matter. I have to show everything on the court.

The Italian continued, "I played a good match. It was not easy to play because of the wind. Being more aggressive helps me play on other surfaces like clay."

Musetti will look to improve his Wimbledon record when he plays his second round match against world No.109 Jaume Munar.
